WordPress Blocks – Part 2 – Images & Video

Welcome to part 2 in this series of tutorials explaining how to use WordPress Blocks. In part 1 we went through how to add headings and paragraphs as well as saving / publishing your changes. You can find part 1 here if you want a recap.

Adding images and video

Adding imagery to your website not only breaks up reams of text but it also helps explain what you’re talking about or shows off your products for example or places you’ve been.
Video takes this a step further and each has there place.

How do I add images and video in WordPress Blocks?

It’s really simple, and you may have even already worked it out from part 1. Find the + symbol to add a new block and look or search for the image or video block. See below:

Adding an image using WordPress Block

You’ll notice that searching ‘image’ for example brings up a gallery block too. If you needed to add multiple images, the gallery block will do the job much better than repeatedly adding image blocks. There’s also some nice options that can help with layout, which brings me onto block settings.

Gallery block settings

Every block has settings which can be found directly above the block when clicked and on the right hand side. Each block has different settings so feel free to explore them. Simply click on a block to display it’s settings.

See my image settings below. I can add alt text and select the appropriate image size to the right and I can align the image, add a link to the image or replace it using hte settings just above my selected block.

NOTE: Images are great but it’s vitally important not to upload massive imagery, such as images taken steraight off a camera. These images are way too big and will negatively impact your search engine rankings due to slower loading times of your pages. Always resize prior to uploading to your website. If you’re ever unsure, get in touch and we’ll try to advise but generally 800px wide works for most cases.

Adding your videos via YouTube

Adding videos to your site is great however they consume a lot of server resources. To get around this we always recommend uploading your videos to a YouTube or Vimeo account first and then embed.

Follow the steps to add a new block however this time search or look for the video block.

Add the block and then choose ‘Insert from URL’. Paste your video link into the box and press the enter icon. Your video should now display.

Recap

  • Image blocks are single images. Use the gallery block if you have more.
  • Image shold be resized prior to uploading to the website. This helps with page speed and those on slower connections.
  • Each block has it’s own settings on the right hand side once clicked. Use these to adjust the block to your preferences.
  • Videos should be embeded from YouTube or Vimeo and not uploaded straight to the website as this uses a lot of resources.

That’s it for part 2. You can view part 3 here if you’re interested in the many other things you can do with WordPress blocks.
